Don't Be Fooled By Those Darn Labels
I recently spent a few hours at Expo West, the largest Natural Products
Expo in the world. Every year I am disgusted by the false advertising
going down at this event. It is supposedly an expo of health foods yet in
reality, there is enough sugar and processed food in there to send a
thousand diabetics into a coma. Let me walk you through the aisles of
misinformation... first of all let's hit gluten free.
There are gluten free cookies, chips, muffins, pancakes, etc... Guess what,
if you wouldn't eat these things before, merely taking the gluten out of
them does NOT make them healthy. They are still a high glycemic carb bomb
sure to send your blood sugar and insulin soaring thus telling your body
to store fat, not the message that I am interesting in telling my body.
Next let's look at all of the soy products. So how does a soybean become
ice cream, milk, hotdogs, etc.? It isn't magic, it is called PROCESSING
which is the antithesis of eating as close to nature as possible. Besides
soy is an endocrine disruptor, potentially allergenic and may lower
thyroid function in excessive amounts which I see people consuming in
their quest for great health.
Next, natural sweeteners. Guess what, sugar is sugar is sugar is sugar.
There is a little benefit from raw organic honey- so if you have seasonal
allergies eat ½ teaspoon a day (yep, that was ½ of a teaspoon!). So this
idea of organic sugar, raw sugar, agave, etc. being healthy is ridiculous.
Your body handles it all the same, it raises blood sugar, raises insulin,
increases oxidative stress, inflammation and stress hormones. It also
causes AGES - that is where sugar binds to proteins without the need of
enzymes and accelerates aging.
I found a few REAL health foods at the event... and I had to look... I found
Evolution Fresh Essential Greens drink ( I LOVE THIS STUFF), Greens Plus
CHIA seeds, a variety of great essential oils, wild fish and grass fed
beef and SunFiber. I had to look though and I kept thinking, I know
better here, what about those who don't?
Remember next time you go into your favorite health food store - just
because a product is in there doesn't make it healthy... read the labels and
make educated decisions about what you are choosing to put into your
temple.
