Resolve to Live Healthier

For many Americans, making New Year's resolutions has become a time-honored tradition. Of course, a resolution is only as good as the commitment to keep it. Starting with a determined "Can Do!" attitude will help ensure success. Don't underestimate your ability to make positive changes in your own life! It's also important to remember that lifestyle changes start with setting realistic goals.

Goals for positive changes in lifestyle are often easy to identify. Common examples are:

  • I will make healthy food choices.
  • I will exercise more.
  • I will incorporate stress management techniques into my day.

The next step is defining the tasks that are needed to achieve these goals. Here are some examples:

I will make healthy food choices by . . .

  • Planning supermarket trips with a list of good food choices - no impulse buying!
  • Preparing foods on weekends for quick heating for supper on busy weekdays.
  • Incorporating a meatless meal into my diet at least three times each week.

I will exercise more by . . .

  • Waking up 15 minutes earlier to walk.
  • Keeping workout clothes in the car for after work activity.
  • Integrating exercise as a routine, just like showering and brushing teeth.

I will incorporate stress management techniques into my day by . . .

  • Taking five "me breaks" throughout the day -- these are simple deep cleansing breaths.
  • Stretching in the morning and throughout the day.
  • Putting together all things needed for the next day the night before to reduce early morning panic.

A resolution needs to be evaluated weekly to determine if goals are realistic and being met. Resolutions can also be modified to make them more achievable. Remember, even if only 25% of a goal is achieved, you still benefit from a healthier lifestyle!
